Blue Lacquered Candlestick
Hand lacquered and engraved candlestick. Blue lacquer with white details
27.5 cm height
These products are lacquered and engraved by a small family business in Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, in the north of the country near the Afghan border. The head artisan’s great, great grandfather fled to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa from Delhi in 1857 after a rebellion against the British, taking this centuries-old technique with him. Lacquerwork originated in Central Asia & became one of the many crafts that flourished under the Mughal emperors that ruled much of South Asia between the 16th & 19th centuries.
Only a few families still do this work in Pakistan & the technique has largely died out in India.
Please note these products are made by hand & each one is slightly different. The tiny differences and inconsistencies are what make them unique & special & give them character.
